Students & phones

At the start of the Students ICT Conference on Monday, Russell Prue (http://www.andertontiger.com/russell/default.htm) asked the students to solve this problem:

After a short time, Russell managed to coax the students into using their phones to solve the problem, with the answer being:

What was interesting to me was how long it took the students to realise that they were allowed to use their mobile phones, they were surprised to be asked to take their phones out.  Why are educators still finding it hard to allow their students to use this tremendous piece of technology?
