CEOP Update

1) SID10

Safer Internet Day (SID) is an annual event organised by Insafe to promote the safer and more responsible use of online technologies and mobile phones. CEOP acts as the co-ordinator of SID activities in the UK. The theme for this year is “Think before you post”, encouraging children and young people to manage their online identity by utilising privacy settings on social networking sites, selecting friends online that they can trust and taking careful consideration of the potential consequences before publishing images of themselves and others online. For further information about CEOP’s initiatives and resources for SID10 please read on or visit www.thinkuknow.co.uk/saferinternetdayuk

2) SID10 Activities Map

Do you have any plans for SID10? If so, please let us know! We have an interactive map highlighting local initiatives and activities planned for SID10. Here you can publicise your activities, inform members of the public in your local area where they can find out more information and find out about fellow initiatives in your locality. Want to get involved but not sure how? Here you will also find suggestions of awareness raising activities to inspire you! www.thinkuknow.co.uk/saferinternetdayuk/activities

The theme is “Think before you post” and there are loads of great prizes to be won. Please find attached a poster for promoting the competition to children and young people at your school. 5) Offline Resources

We are pleased to announce that we are once again able to receive and dispatch orders of our offline resources. We apologise for any inconvenience caused during the suspension in this service. Ahead of Safer Internet Day demand for leaflets and posters will be high and supplies are limited, so please take this in to consideration when specifying quantities. However, we are pleased to report that a variety of new and updated resources are being prepared for Safer Internet Day and will be available to order and download soon. Please keep checking the website for further updates. www.thinkuknow.co.uk/teachers/resources.aspx

6) Ambassadors – Thinkuknow ½ Day Training Presentation

The Thinkuknow Half Day Training course has been updated with the latest information and content.  This has now been uploaded to the Thinkuknow Resources area for Ambassadors to download.  There are guidance notes under each of the presentation slides for those trainers who haven’t attended the revised course themselves or would like additional support in delivery.  For those of you who struggle to download large files, there will soon be presentation discs that you can order through the site to be delivered to you by post.

7) Launch of TUK Version 3 and Lesson Plans for 11 – 16’s

The Thinkuknow presentation has been redeveloped and designed with brand new content identifying the latest issues for young people online.  The presentation introduces various themes such as sexting, cyberbullying, personal information sharing and grooming.  This interactive resource includes award winning awareness films.

Comprehensive guidance notes are supplied for presenters (those who have attended the half day Thinkuknow training) to assist delivery.  The presentation is designed to introduce key themes, however to assist trainers to help young people assess the issues in more depth, we are launching five topical lesson plans.  The curriculum based lesson plans cover positive use of technology, grooming, cyberbullying, sexting and privacy.  These resources will be available on the resources area of the website at the end of January.

8) New 11 – 16’s Website

The 11 – 16’s area of the website has been redesigned and now hosts information on an extensive range of issues.  The new site covers topics such as grooming, cyberbullying, hacking, social networking, privacy and security, sexual abuse, inappropriate content, child trafficking, pro-ana and mia sites, sexting, legal rights and responsibilities and much more.  The site includes a range of educational games, films and competitions to engage young people of this age group.   The site also provides important information on who to tell and exactly where to go if they are worried about different issues.  This site is now live so let us know what you think!

9) PROTECT – Programme update

The PROTECT volunteers will be matched with schools to begin presenting on and around SID 2010. There are currently 192 volunteers signed up to the programme and training events are well underway with another scheduled for 25th of this month. In addition to requests to have a CEOP speaker within schools, schools are being contacted to become involved in the PROTECT programme within the Leeds, Reading and London area. We currently have over 100 schools signed up for a volunteer to present in their schools.

Best wishes,

CEOP Education Team
