This 2008/9 Wikipedia DVD Selection is a free, hand-checked, non-commercial selection from Wikipedia, targeted around the UK National Curriculum and useful for much of the English speaking world. It has about 5500 articles (as much as can be fitted on a DVD with good size images) and is about the size of a twenty volume encyclopaedia (34,000 images and 20 million words).
Clearly every page cannot be verified nor validated (by me) but the concept appears to be good – condensing the wide-ranging content into a resource that is appropriate for use in school, and produced in such a size that it can be burned to a single DVD. Bear in mind that the content won’t be updated after you burn it but has the advantage that it won’t get vandalised either.
The idea is great but the disclaimer applies that Shropshire Council can’t be responsible for the content on external websites.
