Today John Hargreaves, the Shropshire County Council Press Officer, gave a presentation to the Advisory Service on communicating through the media. The boot was on the other foot as Advisers were captivated by the fast-paced advice given by John at the Monkmoor Teacher Development Centre.

In Shropshire could we organise a similar scheme, or even have a central collection for sending them to Computer Aid. What do people think? Dale said an ex teacher from Mary Webb is now working out in Africa, maybe we could set up a direct link. How would we fund the shipping of them? Any thoughts???

There are a number of sites that offer royalty-free images. Sometimes the interface is a bit quirky (like this one) but often their heart’s in the right place. Of course, before directing pupils to a RFI site you need to make sure that images therein are appropriate…
Free software that allows you to communicate for free has to be worth a look, surely? Imagine talking to experts in your subject from anywhere in the world, and recording the conversation for later use as a learning resource.
With Skype (and a few other bells and whistles) it’s possible…

After today’s Shropshire ICT Co-ords meeting where Steve showed the vagaries of Google as a search engine (see this article on Google Bombing), I tried some others. Here’s one I like, not necessarily for the search engine capability (it’s yahoo powered) but for the interface, which I’ve used as a file manager in the past. And for the name - Grokker. Those who are ancient enough to have read Heinlein’s Stranger_in_a_Strange_Land (as appearing in the Billy Joel song “We didn’t start the fire“) will fully understand what grok means.
